You guys know that breast cancer is an issue that is near and dear to my heart. My mom, a ten year survivor, is alive and preparing to greet her fifth and sixth grandchildren this summer – none of whom she would have known had she not beaten the odds against this disease.

While talking with her on the phone yesterday, Mom informed me just how much has changed with breast cancer treatment in the 10 years that she’s been healthy. She’s been attending appointments with a friend who has recently been diagnosed, and is so pleased to hear that huge improvements have been made in anti-nausea meds and pain meds while going through chemo and radiation. While this is a tribute to the hard work that has been done by organizations like Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, cancer treatments continue to be agonizing, time consuming, and costly. It’s time we eradicate this disease once and for all.

As women, we need to take breast cancer seriously because one in eight women in the US will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. It is the leading cause of death among US women ages 40-59, which means that it is not just affecting women, but also friends, spouses, children and grandchildren. We can stop breast cancer in its tracks with continued funding for research, lifestyle changes, screening and early detection.

Susan G. Komen for the Cure® is the world’s largest, most progressive, non-profit breast cancer organization and has invested nearly $1.5 billion in breast cancer research and community programs to date. They are the organizers of the infamous 60-mile 3-day walk that I have participated in twice, once with new friends and once with my sisters. The 3-day walk proved to be the most physically challenging experience of my life, and yet so incredibly rewarding to cross the finish line and see my mom standing there – a survivor.

While I desperately wish that I could be walking the Komen 3-day this year, I’m going to be just a few months post-partum when it comes around, so I’m trying to support in other ways by donating to walkers and by participating in this awesome program that KFC is running. For every Pink Bucket, KFC makes a 50 cent contribution to Susan G. Komen for the Cure. The Pink buckets will be available in KFC restaurants through May 23rd. These KFC Pink Buckets will feature the names of breast cancer survivors and those who lost the battle to breast cancer. The goal is to “Join the Cause” with KFC in reaching more women with the message of breast health, enlisting additional support for Susan G. Komen for the Cure® and helping KFC make THE SINGLE LARGEST DONATION EVER in the fight against Breast Cancer! Kudos to KFC for wanting to do this!

You can participate by visiting your KFC (and get a bucket of extra tasty crispy for me, wouldja?) or making an additional contribution at bucketsforthecure.com.

Not only is KFC participating in this awesome fundraiser, but BlogHer will donate $1 for every comment left on the blog posts and across the other posts from the Exclusive Offer page at BlogHer.com, up to a total of $1000 for the entire program.

So let’s raise some money for breast cancer awareness! Get commenting to earn those donation dollars, and let me know you do to make a difference in the lives of others.

My mom is a 4.5 year survivor of breast cancer. The year she was diagnosed (2006), my roommate and I participated in the Boston 3-Day. When we crossed the finish line, my mom was there, bald from chemo. We hugged and cried and cried! What a great moment! Thank you for sharing your story.

Priscilla, you rock. My mom’s been a survivor about the same time as your mama, and it is amazing what improvements have been made in treatment. It gives me hope. Thanks for a great post.

P.S. I did the 3-Day, too. And yes, it was the most physically challenging thing I’ve ever done, but also one of the most gratifying!

To survival! Thanks for this easy way to raise much needed funds. Wonderful!

  22. S Says:

My grandmother was a breast cancer survivor. She’d be disgusted if she were alive today. The Komen Foundation PROMOTES breast cancer, NOT a cure.

If you really care about women, and about ending breast cancer, visit http://www.bucketsforthecause.com to find out what Komen is REALLY doing for women.

  23. BK Says:

My mom had breast cancer – stage 4. Removal, reconstruction and NO treatment outside of pills. 8 years later, lung cancer hit her (non-smoker, allergic to smoke, {ps, Colorado has the highest occurance of lung cancer in the nation}). This time, chemo. 4 or 5 months later, while on chemo, the cancer had traveled to the adrenal gland on the right side. She survived the chemo and survived the cancers. To help get her mind on something else, we planned and took a trip to some family history sites of her great grandfather. That was in 2000 – about 11 years after the breast removal. Who knows how long it the cancer had lay developing before it was found. Today she is 82 and has had addition back surgeries (spine & neck) and is still plugging away, now waiting to get to her garden and enjoying her great-granddaughters.

  24. BK Says:

I forgot. It’s been aroung 21 years surviving and living from her breast cancer surgery in 1988-89,

  25. Laura Cunnington Says:

My mom’s best friend died of breast cancer about 10 or 11 years ago, so it’s always been a cause close to my heart. I love supporting Susan G. Koman!
