Week 11/12

Thanksgiving has come and gone and we had a wonderful time, as I hope you did too. Unfortunately Matt couldn’t take any time off other than Thanksgiving Day because he’s taking two weeks off at Christmas. Ironically, the way his job works it won’t even be eating into any of his “paid vacation” days, it will just be two weeks straight where he has no appointments. But that means the months of November and December have been and will continue to be insane for him.

But the good news is, that I might be on the verge of actually turning back into a human being who can, you know, walk around without vomiting. The hardest thing about this first trimester has been my inability to help with a lot of things that I wanted to help with, ie: moving into our house, construction on the kitchen, making meals. Which means Matt has been carrying a lot more than he typically does over the past two months. And while his job starts to pick up before the holidays, I am really hoping to be able to get back to my normal self and take some of the little stuff off his plate.

So the first trimester. At my previous ultrasound I was measuring such that I’m in week 11 now, although all of the online calculators are pegging me at 12. So while my midwife is saying I’m in week 11, I am telling myself I’m in week 12 to psychologically convince my stomach to behave. I don’t want to say anything for sure, but I can tell you that my good days are now happening as frequently as my bad days.

About those bad days. I am writing this post not to whine or get your pity. Every woman who has had morning sickness knows how miserable it is. Instead, I am writing this post so that in three years when I’m starting to want another tiny little baby, I can look back at this post and rethink the whole thing very carefully. Because this first trimester has SUCKED THE BIG ONE way more than I could have ever imagined.

Priscilla of three years from now, remember what it felt like to have a lime popsicle come shooting out your nose and mouth onto the hallway floor while you raced to the bathroom but didn’t make it? YEAH THAT.

Priscilla of three years from now, have you so quickly forgotten those two horrible evenings when you just started bawling while throwing up, and crying into Matt’s lap saying that you just wished your mom was here? Just remember that moment the next time Matt comes within a mile radius of you. DO NOT LET HIM NEAR YOU.

My good days have involved vomiting only once, usually in the morning, and then being completely wiped out the rest of the day. My bad days have involved vomiting up every single thing I put in my mouth, including water and finally being able to hold down a cup of milk and a chocolate chip cookie at 10 pm. I have a whole new respect for bulimics.

It is so easy to forget those rough moments now that I’m having moments where I feel great! And hungry! Like last night when I decided to whip up a chocolate cake and turn that heavy whipping cream in the fridge into homemade whipped cream to eat with the chocolate cake! And it was delicious and I couldn’t even remember what it was like to throw up!

All this to say, I am SO SO SO SO SO SO GLAD that the first trimester is over, or nearly over. I am so glad I am slowly getting some energy back, and I’m so glad that I want to cook again and clean again.

And I am also amazed and thrilled and tickled pink that the lemon-sized baby in my belly has successfully made it to week 11/12. Way to go, Little Friend! And thank you, God. Like for real.

  • Why, Hello There!

Hey, I'm Priscilla, a New England native who has oddly enough found herself in the South. I'm married to Matt, and together we have a dog, Berlin, a cat, Mojo, and perfect baby girl named Penny. We are Nashvillians by convenience, lovers of good music by design, house renovators by accident, and non-hipster foodies by necessity. Take a stroll around and introduce yourself!
