The Thanksgiving Menu Of Warm Fuzzies

My Thanksgiving memories are all wrapped around my maternal grandmother’s dining room table. Each year that we were with that side of the family, we’d have the world’s most amazing feast. I plan on making this exact menu the next time I host my own Thanksgiving dinner.

  • We’d always start off the meal with fruit cup, really a great way to begin
  • A big ole honkin turkey roasted by my grandmother and carved by my grandfather
  • Homemade turkey gravy
  • Mashed potatoes
  • Green bean casserole
  • Corn casserole
  • Pureed turnips
  • Sliced yams
  • Mashed squash
  • Creamed baby onions
  • Rolls
  • Stuffing
  • Jellied salad
  • Cauliflower casserole
  • Cranberry sauce – sometimes two kinds
  • I’d always have a glass of milk and a glass of cider
  • Grammie’s homemade pumpkin pie, apple pie, and pecan pie
  • And then we’d finish off the meal sitting around the table cracking nuts

Tomorrow for our Thanksgiving meal with friends, I’ll be making a turkey and a sourdough stuffing with sausage and pears – a little bit different from the stuffing Grammie used to make. But I’m going to make her turnips the same exact way.

For me it’s turnips – what’s that one dish that MAKES Thanksgiving for you?

deviled eggs. I only ever have them at Thanksgiving and no one makes them like my cousin does. I have the recipe and they still don’t turn out right!

Have a Happy Holiday you guys!

you know, i absolutely despise deviled eggs, but the thought of eating one right now sounds VERY appealing for some reason. whack.

Mom is horrified by your dislike of deviled eggs, by the way. I can say that on behalf of her. I made those everytime I had her over the last couple years.

I remember sitting at your grammie’s table until I was 8 – but it was for christmas, though the menu sounds quite similar. My Grandpa Newton always came from Meriden to New Hartford to be at our house for Thanksgiving – I am guessing it had something to do with my father needing to prep for sunday service. And perhaps so Mom could host him.

Hmmm – I think my favorite has to be the potatoes and gravy, but then there is turkey and gravy, stuffing and gravy….so perhaps it is the gravy. I rarely eat it other times. Cranberries too. Can I only have one?

  4. Priscilla Priscilla Says:

oh faye, GRAVY! of course! gravy is definitely a favorite for me. and cranberries too. i think you can have as many favorites as you want!

do you have plans for christmas, or should i start whining for you to come to NH?
